hit by a Russian torpedo and sank on January 30, 1945. Some say that 5,100 of the 10,000 refugees on board drowned in the icy waters of the Baltic. Others state that 9,300 lost their lives. The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff is the greatest maritime disaster on record."
